When you are looking to sell an old car and upgrade to something new, on of the first things to consider is how to make the sale. Some people are happy put notices online or in the classifieds section of the paper, but used car dealerships are also an option.

As a registered business, a used car dealership can provide the security of a sale without the hassle of showing scores of people the inner workings of your former car. On the other hand, you may end up getting less cash for the car than if you sell it independently.

So how do you decide whether to go through a used car dealership? In the end it comes down to personal preference, but it is a particularly good option for the following situations:

  • Trading an old car for a more recent used car
  • Selling an old car fast
  • Selling an old car that could only be used for scraps
  • People who are too busy to spend time negotiating prices and viewing times; and
  • People who have never sold a car before

If you do decide to go through a used car dealership, it may be good to go to several different ones to try and get quotes on the value of your car. Alternatively, you may want to ask your mechanic for a price estimate so that you can be sure of the value before beginning negotiations with a used car dealership so that you know you are really getting your money’s worth.

Used cars can be sold as trade-ins for newer models through a used car dealership.
